Multiple vehicles were involved in a collision that occurred just yesterday on northbound I-270 in St. Louis, MO. A SkyFOX helicopter provided aerial footage of the remnants of the accident allowing you to see just how serious the collision was. While all the cars involved did sustain damage, one red vehicle looks as though it took the brunt of the impact as it appears to be mangled.
Fox 2 Now reported that there were at least seven vehicles involved in the crash and several of the victims did suffer non-life-threatening injuries, although one person was said to have suffered serious injuries. Maryland Heights Fire crews arrived on scene and had to extricate one victim from their vehicle and three people were transported to an area hospital for treatment. One of the victims, Anthony Bauman, tweeted a photo of himself showing the cuts and gashes he had on his face as a result of the accident. His comment read, “I am going to be ok say a prayer for the people in the red car. Hope everyone involved is ok. I was in the black Dodge truck.” As mentioned, the red vehicle that was caught on camera did appear to be the most damaged among all the automobiles involved.
News Reporter Says St. Louis Drivers Were Trying to Capture Accident Scene on Camera
Katie Kormann, who reported on the accident, stated that she witnessed many individuals who were passing by on both sides of the interstate, taking photos of the accident while they were operating their vehicles. The news reporter reminded residents who happened to pass through this portion of the interstate that they should refrain from using their cell phones while driving as it would only lead to another accident occurring. Kormann said that she even saw some drivers trying to look back over their shoulders just to catch a glimpse of the accident scene.
Because officials determined that the wet roadways along with speeding may have played a factor, it is important for drivers to focus on the roads, not an accident, especially when there are inclement weather conditions present.
What are some things you can be doing to help prevent an accident?
After looking at this particular accident scene and listening to the commentary provided by news reporter Katie Kormann, we feel it is important to remind all drivers that the roadway is a dangerous place and identify some of the types of behaviors you should never engage in.
- Never use your cell phone while driving. Whether you need to make a call, answer a text, or want to capture a moment on video, pull off to the side of the road to do so. As Kormann mentioned, many people who were behind the wheel of their own vehicles were trying to capture the accident scene on camera which only adds to the risk that is already present.
- Don’t get distracted by accidents, construction sites, or other things that might be going on in the roadway. Although you are going to want to be cautious when passing by an accident or even a construction site, don’t lose focus on the roadway ahead of you.
- Don’t drive recklessly or carelessly, especially when inclement weather is present.
