Teenage girl texting and drivingWestchester, NY- A third teen has died from injuries he and four other sustained last week in a crash between a driver’s education car and semi-truck.
Westchester News 12 reported earlier this week that Lucas O’Connor, 16, died at the hospital just a day after he and four other teens were struck by a tractor-trailer while taking a driver’s education course.
On July 14th, four teens– one girl and three boys– and their driving instructor were traveling along County Road 1 in Warwick when the car they were traveling in was T-boned by a tractor-trailer. Police say that the 16-year-old girl was driving at the time and came to a blinking traffic signal at Blooms Corner Road. At the same time the tractor-trailer was approaching the intersection. Once at the intersection, the teen driver stopped for the blinking red light, but only briefly, before proceeding through the intersection where the car was immediately struck by a tractor-trailer.
NBC New York reports that the tractor-trailer had a blinking yellow light so that driver actually had the right of way.
Two of the teen boys sitting in the back were pronounced dead at the scene. O’Connor survived the initial impact, but died just a few days later. The female driver of the car and the driving instructor suffered serious injuries.
Locals say that the accident where this collision occurred is dangerous and have repeatedly called on officials to put a fully function stop light at the intersection instead of the blinking yellow light, according to NBC New York.
