This past Christmas, 18-year-old Colton McMurdie wasn’t caught up in the gift-giving like many others were. This past Christmas, the teen simply wanted to regain his ability to walk. Back in March of this year, McMurdie was driving home on an Arizona roadway when his back left tire blew. His father stated that “as his tire blew, he went off on the side of the road. He had a build-up of desert debris which caused him to go end over end” [Source: AZ Family]. The Toyota 4Runner he was driving flipped 10 times during the crash and he was ejected from his vehicle which was traveling at approximately 70 miles an hour.
McMurdie was rushed to Phoenix Children’s Hospital where surgeon Dr. Justin Lee began going to work. While the teen was lucky enough to make it to the hospital, he was going to have to undergo some major surgeries. Not only did both his legs take a big hit in the accident, but he also suffered a spinal cord injury, a vascular injury, and an aortic injury. After going through nearly a dozen surgeries and spending nearly two months in the hospital, McMurdie was finally able to leave.
Although many attempts were made to help remedy the injuries poor McMurdie suffered from, he is still partially paralyzed from the waist down and is confined to a wheelchair. While the teen once had a desire to play basketball, hockey, and football, he now spends his afternoons going to therapy. While he is working hard toward strengthening his muscles, the teen knows the road ahead is going to be a long one. While this experience isn’t something he ever dreamt of, it has allowed him to view life from a different perspective.
