Biloxi, MS- Losing a love one in a traffic accident is nightmare for any family, but it is even more tragic to learn that that a fatal accident was caused by a drunken driver. It’s hard for a family when they realize that the accident which killed their loved one could have been prevented if that intoxicated driver just stayed off the road, called a cab or stayed at a friend’s. But drunk drivers don’t think about how they could harm another person like a Mississippi man who killed two teenage girls in a drunken driving accident earlier this week.
According to the WLOX, the accident occurred early Sunday morning in Jackson County as five people, four teen girls and one unidentified person, were traveling on Route 78. Police say that a 32-year-old motorist clipped the rear of the car, sending it off the road and out of control.
Two seventeen year-old girls in the vehicle were killed. The other three passengers suffered minor injuries and are recovering. Police said everyone on the vehicle was wearing safety belts at the time of the crash.
Police said the girls were returning to Tennessee after spending a little time in Florida.
WLOX reports that the driver who clipped the girls’ car was intoxicated at the time of the crash and has been charged with DUI-death by auto, three counts of vehicular assault. Police said the driver has several DUI arrests from various counties in state.
Even though accidents like this one occur with frequency, drunken driving accidents have been steadily declining over the past three decades. That’s the good news. The bad news is that drugs and alcohol still play role in a third of fatal accidents nationwide, causing unnecessary pain and grief for thousands.
