A toddler was one of five individuals to suffer fatal injuries in an accident that occurred in Rutherford, NJ back in May. The New York Post reported that three females, a male, and a toddler had been occupying an SUV that was heading westbound on Route 3 near the Orient Way overpass at the time of the incident. It was around 11:00 p.m. when the SUV struck the back of a moving construction vehicle. While officials pronounced the three females and the male deceased at the scene, the toddler passed away several hours later after being transported to Hackensack University Medical Center.
The driver of the front-end loader did not suffer any injuries.
After the tragic incident, Rutherford Police Chief John Russo issued this statement, “The initial thought is that it’s simply an awful accident—nothing criminal in nature.” However, before the true cause of the crash can be determined, the Bergen County prosecutor’s Fatal Accident Investigations Unit, Rutherford and New Jersey State Police, and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification must conduct an investigation into the incident.
While officials initially withheld the names of the victims, NJ.com later disclosed the names of those involved. Ayana Navas,16, who was a sophomore at John F. Kennedy Education Complex School of Education and Training, was one of the unfortunate victims who lost their lives. Her mother, Michelle Toledo, 38, Irvina Gee, 20, who was an alumna of the same city school, and Sheckylle Chain, 23, were the three others who were killed in the collision.
