The U.S. has the highest rate of traffic fatalities of 20 of the wealthiest nations including Australia, Belgium, Finland, Japan and New Zealand.
Pittsburgh, PA- Although there has a been a decline in fatal auto accidents in the U.S., it still has the highest rate of traffic deaths compared to twenty other wealthy nations, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control.
Ninety people die in car crashes a day in the U.S. the report shows. That is nearly double the fatality rate of comparable nations including Belgium and Sweden statistics from 2013 show. While that rate is high, fatal accident rates in the country are down, but the CDC says the fatality rate in the U.S. only declined by 31 percent over the study period significantly lower than the average of 56 percent.
So, why are traffic deaths so high in the U.S.?
For one, there are more cars in the U.S. and more of the country’s population relies on car and autos as their primary modes of transportation.
The CDC report shows that one in three traffic deaths are attributed to drunken drivers. That equates to 31 percent or 10,000 traffic deaths each year. Only Canada has a higher rate of drunk driving deaths than the U.S. with impairment accounting for 34 percent of fatal auto crashes.
Nearly fifty percent of traffic fatalities involved a driver or passenger who was not wearing a seat belt.
Another factor that contributes to the U.S.’s high fatality rate is speeding. The CDC report states that, like drunk driving, one in three deadly crashes were caused by speeding motorists in the U.S.
The third cause of traffic fatalities in the U.S. is the lack of safety restraints. According to the CDC, fifty percent of adults and children killed in car crashes were not wearing seat belts or were not properly restrained. Only 87 percent of American motorists use seat belts and child restraints.
If all drivers took steps to avoid the three awful habits listed above, more lives could be spared from tragedy. But there are so many motorists on the road who don’t act in their best interest or the best interests of other motorists. These careless drivers should be held accountable for the harm they caused others.
