Tucson, AZ- Police suspect a driver was speeding or was intoxicated when he caused a multiple-car collision over the weekend which left a nearly two-year veteran of the Tucson force dead.
On Saturday, August 1st, around 1:30 p.m. Tucson Police Officer Isaac Rosario was with his daughter, traveling on NW Grand Ave. in Glendale when he was struck by an out-of-control motorist, the Arizona Daily Star reported.
Authorities say that 36-year old Steven Mendez, who was driving a SUV in the eastbound lanes, lost control of his car and struck two utility poles. The impact of that initial collision sent  Mendez’s vehicle into oncoming traffic where he struck two vehicles.
Officer Rosario was one of those vehicles and was pronounced dead on the scene, according to the Arizona Daily Star. Mendez was also killed on impact. Fortunately, Rosario’s daughter survived the crash but suffered serious injuries.
The person on the second car Mendez struck only suffered minor injuries.
Police suspect that either alcohol or speed were factors in the crash but have yet to find the exact cause of the accident.
Even though we don’t know whether speed or intoxication or both caused this accident we do know that these two reckless behaviors are leading causes of fatal traffic accidents in Arizona, and the U.S. as a whole. These reckless behaviors lead to thousands of unnecessary injuries and deaths every year, leaving victims suffering indescribable grief and pain. An accident will also saddle the victims with costly medical bills.
Accident victims and their surviving loved ones justifiably expect an at-fault driver to cover all the accident-related expenses they face. Victims can seek compensation for their medical bills, rehabilitation, funeral expenses, emotional distress and property repair or placement costs. If a person is killed, their loved ones are eligible for their any costs they incur along with compensation for their loss of companionship, loss of financial support and mental anguish.
