accident lawyerWest Jordan, UT- Police suspect the man who caused an accident that killed a West Jordan man as he drove his teen-aged granddaughter to school Tuesday morning.
Police say 78-year-old William Horner was driving his granddaughter to school around 7:15 a.m. when a motorist driving a pickup truck ran a red light at the intersection of Red Wood Road and 8200 South and slammed into two vehicles, according to Fox 13.
Horner’s vehicle was pushed “several hundred feet” and into a dry canal. Horner was killed on impact and his granddaughter was seriously injured, Fox 13 reported.
The driver of the pickup, who has been identified as 32-year-old Cole Munoz, suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
During the course of the investigation, West Jordan Police found a drug pipe in his vehicle which he admitted was his. Police also say that Munoz admitted to them that he had been taking drugs all night and admitted to being high when the accident occurred.
In a search of court records, KSL.com found that Munoz has a previous DUI charge along with several drug charges and traffic violations.
Intoxicated driving is risky enough, but it is typical for impaired drivers to engage in other risky behaviors that make an accident much more serious and increase the likelihood it will be deadly. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that a fatal drunken or drugged driving accident occurs every 48 minutes in the U.S. That is an alarming fact.
While we understand that someone under the influence is not capable of making reasonable decisions that doesn’t mean their actions can be excused or dismissed and they should have to pay for the consequences of their actions.
Aside from the criminal implications of a drunken or drugged driving accident, intoxicated drivers must also answer to the victims and their families. It’s normal for a family to be angry when they lose a loved one to a drunken of drugged driver. They want justice and seeing the at-fault party is not always enough for a family or an accident victim; these victims need financial compensation.
