When Can I Sue for a Pedestrian Accident in Mississippi?
Many people in Mississippi enjoy the simple pleasure of taking a stroll. However, even this basic freedom can be cut short by a negligent driver who recklessly strikes the pedestrian — leaving them with serious injuries or worse. The bad news is that pedestrian accidents are quite common in Mississippi, and they can threaten virtually anyone. But can you really sue for a pedestrian accident in the Magnolia State?
Pedestrian Struck and Killed in Jackson
On October 14th, it was reported that a pedestrian had been struck and killed while trying to cross I-55. After striking the pedestrian, the elderly woman drove off the side of the highway and crashed through a gate before impacting a stationary Mercedes. No further details were released, and we can only speculate whether drugs or reckless driving were involved in this particular story.
Pedestrian Struck and Killed in Hattiesburg
On October 16th, it was reported that a pedestrian had been struck and killed in Hattiesburg. The accident occurred on US-49, and it is unclear whether the pedestrian was walking along the side of the road or attempting to cross. The driver of the vehicle thankfully stopped and immediately contacted authorities. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the driver was completely blameless in the crash — although they did do the right thing by stopping.
Court Finds that Officer Was Driving Recklessly Before Striking Pedestrian
On September 21st of 2022, a Mississippi court found that a police officer was driving in a reckless manner before impacting a pedestrian. The accident involved a police officer reaching a speed of 73 miles per hour over a crosswalk — eventually striking a pedestrian’s vehicle. The crash resulted in a pedestrian and her child being hospitalized. The victim later sued the police department for her injuries. The police department attempted to defend itself by stating that the officer used its lights and blaring horns of his approach — but there is not much a pedestrian can do to avoid being hit when a police car is traveling at such high velocities.
Pedestrian Left Deceased After Hit-and-Run in Hancock County
On October 5th, it was reported that a pedestrian had lost their life after a hit-and-run in Hancock County. After striking the pedestrian, the driver attempted to flee to a nearby trailer park. However, the police officers later located the suspect and his vehicle. He is now being charged with leaving the scene of an accident — a common offense when it comes to pedestrian collisions. It is unclear whether he will be charged with vehicular manslaughter — although this is certainly a possibility.
