Why You Might Want to Remain in Your Vehicle After a Crash

San Diego Car Crash

After an accident, many people instinctively get out of their vehicles and some distance between themselves and the collision. This is known as a “fight-or-flight” response, and it causes people to make decisions without really thinking them through. Although it might seem like a good idea to get out of the car and “escape,” this can actually put you in considerable danger. Why? Because you may be struck by another vehicle on foot. This is actually more common than you might think, and it happened recently in upstate New York.

If you have been injured by a car accident in upstate New York, it makes sense to get in touch with a qualified, experienced personal injury attorney right away. But we know what you’re thinking: “Where can I find attorneys near me?” The answer is quite simple: There are plenty of qualified attorneys nearby, and these lawyers can help you strive for the best possible results. This often includes a fair settlement that you can use to pay for your medical expenses, missed wages, and much more.

Men Argue After Car Wreck Before Being Struck by a Passing Car

Many individuals become incredibly angry after a car accident. Some exit their vehicles and become intent on arguing or even assaulting those whom they believe to be responsible for their crash. Although this mindset is understandable in many cases, it is incredibly dangerous. For starters, you become very vulnerable when you exit your car immediately after a crash.

Secondly, you may not be able to think clearly when you are consumed by rage. When your sole focus is giving the other driver a piece of your mind, you might not notice a vehicle hurtling towards you at top speed. This is why it’s always a good idea to remain calm and inside of your vehicle until you know it’s safe to get out.

Unfortunately, not everyone listens to this advice. On July 4th, it was reported that two men were struck in upstate New York after getting out of their vehicles and arguing in the middle of the road (1). They had stopped in the middle of Westbound lanes on I-84 in what police later described as a “road-rage altercation.” While they were arguing, a third car approached at high speed and struck them both. Both of these individuals were pronounced dead at the scene by first responders, while the driver of the vehicle suffered minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

It’s difficult to say who was in the wrong here. While the individuals arguing in the middle of the street were clearly acting in an irresponsible manner, perhaps the driver could have approached the scene at a lower speed and with greater caution. This is especially true if the crashed vehicles had their hazard lights on (2).
